The job of Team India’s cricket coach is a coveted one. Every time the BCCI puts out an ad seeking applications, the response has been phenomenal from around the world. The BCCI is a rich body so remuneration will be the best. Add to it, the huge popularity the game has in the country, it’s only natural that the coach will be a household name sooner than later.
The last foreign coach of the Indian team was Duncan Fletcher. Was he successful? Not to the extent that the BCCI thought he would be when he was given the assignment. 2 foreign coaches who made a significant impact and produced great results were Gary Kirsten and John Wright. Both were opening batsmen for their respective countries. Both were left handers and both were not flamboyant during their playing days. However between the 2 most successful foreign coaches was the most controversial one – the man who answers to the name Greg Stephen Chappell. In his playing days, his heroics on the field was undisputed. He was one of the best if not the best batsman of his generation. His knowledge of the game was second to none and he was an astute leader. Most cricket minds thought he was the best man for the job and that included the then Indian captain Sourav Ganguly. Had they taken a closer look at his pedigree as a coach they may not have considered him. Chappell was the coach for South Australia in the 90s but they never won the title.
What can we conclude from the above observations? A good coach need not be the greatest batsman; he should be a good student of the game and more importantly good in man-management. John Buchanan is a good example of a successful coach not having played cricket at the highest level. While he did have his alterations with Shane Warne, he worked closely with the captain and ensured Australia was a champion side.
A coach should be like an elder brother to the players and not like the principal of the school. The players should trust him and respect him; not be irritated or scared of him. Kirsten and Wright were just the ideal coach and Chappell was the coach the players were not comfortable with. The congenial environment in the Indian room was evident in the 2003 and 2011 World Cup where India performed exceedingly well. The lowest point in the last 20 years has to be the 2007 World Cup performance where the dressing room atmosphere was not the best and the result was the worst.
Post Duncan Fletcher’s stint, the BCCI has shown lot of confidence on Indian coaches. Ravi Shastri and Anil Kumble – 2 ex captains of India took up the responsibility and both of them delivered. While applications came from all across the globe, it was heartening to see ex-Indian cricketers wanting to be the coach. With the media providing lucrative opportunities, most cricketers post retirement are seen in the commentary box but there are some who want to give something back to the game. After all it’s cricket that gave them money, fame and recognition.
The IPL franchisees are still positively inclined towards foreign coaches. Except KXIP, every other franchisee has a foreign coach. Of course, there are Indian players as mentors, batting, bowling or fielding coach the head coach in 7/8 franchisees are foreign coaches. Is that because there are foreign players in every team? Do they believe that foreign coaches are tactically better off than Indian coaches? We may never unearth the actual reason but the fact of the matter is that presently the IPL franchisees seem to be trusting foreign coaches. Going forward don’t be surprised if you see a change – Indian cricketers will be appointed as head coach by all IPL franchisees. That would be a major step towards exporting Indian coaches to major cricket playing nations.
It was really heartening to see Amol Muzamdar being appointed by Cricket South Africa as their batting consultant during their recent trip to India. While the contract ended with the tour, it gave us belief that major teams touring India in future may appoint a local coach to thwart the challenges posed by the home team. Indian ex-cricketers have been appointed coaches by international teams – Manoj Prabhakar by Afghanistan, Sunil Joshi by Oman, Venkatapathy Raju by Americas, S. Sriram by Australia but the most significant and successful one was Sandeep Patil appointed by Kenya. And boy! he did not disappoint them. He took them into the semifinals of the 2003 World Cup before losing to India.
With India becoming a major force in cricket and cricket administration, in the next few years, don’t be surprised if ex Indian cricketers start getting more and more coaching opportunities around the world. Who knows, one day we may see an Australian team or an English team with an Indian coach!
