Virat Kohli Resigns As Test Captain; What Next For Team India?

After seven years of being the leader of the Indian team in Test match cricket, Virat Kohli finally calls it a day. Kohli is the most successful test captain in the Indian Cricket team’s history with a 58% win record. In 2014, Kohli took charge of the Indian team for the very first time in Adelaide as a part-time captain in Ms Dhoin’s absence. In the same series, he became India’s Test captain as Dhoine took retirement from test cricket. A few years later, Virat Kohli became India’s captain in all formats.

However, in the shorter version of the game, he never reached the heights of success as Dhoni did with the Indian national team and after the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup Kohli stepped down as T20I captain of India. Later, BCCI decided that India cannot have two captains in two different formats of the white-ball game and decided to replace Kohli to give Rohit Sharma the responsibility to captain India in ODI cricket.

Kohli leaves captaincy after a disappointing series defeat in South Africa but he is still the most successful test captain of India in history. Under Kohli, India reached the finals of the ICC World Test Championship but eventually lost to New Zealand in the final. After that, India won two test matches in England and is currently leading the series 2-1.

At 33, Kohli will not be captaining any team that he plays and will be focusing on delivering more runs with the bat. It has been a long time since he scored his 70th ton and everyone is waiting for his next one. It will be interesting to see who will lead India in test match cricket as KL Rahul has become the favourite to lead the line.
