Talking Points: Rohit Sharma Starts ODI Captaincy With A Win In Landmark Game

In an encounter that was pretty lopsided, a dominant India comfortably rolled past a lacklustre West Indies team in a landmark 1000thy ODI for India as a cricket-playing nation. It also marked the captaincy debut of newly-appointed skipper Rohit Sharma, which went about as smoothly as possible. After being put in to bat, West Indies were all at sea, with a combination of top bowling and some poor shot selection ensuring that they were tottering at 76-7.

Fabian Allen and Jason Holder steadied things with a 78 run stand, but couldn’t stand the relentless onslaught of the Indian bowlers, getting bowled out at 176. In reply, India made sure that there were not a lot of hiccups in their chase, with Sharma leading from the front with a well-made 50, and Suryakumar Yadav completing the run-chase without many problems.

Below we take a look at some talking points of the game

1. Chahal’s resurgence in the team under Rohit Sharma

Yuzuvendra Chahal really needed this performance. He was in a poor nick, he was being taken for runs and he wasn’t able to take the wickets that he normally does with ease. But today he was back with a vengeance. On a pitch that had some assistance for the spinners, Chahal was back to his wily self, constantly hitting the right lengths and troubling the batsmen with his variations. This performance will install a much-needed confidence booster for the spinner, who will be hoping to use this as a springboard for a consistent run of performances.

2. Rohit’s captaincy debut ticks all the right boxes

It is no secret that Rohit Sharma is a very good captain. His five IPL titles with Mumbai Indians are a testament to that. But amid the background in which he received the captaincy was pretty farcical, to say the least. So questions were rise as to whether Rohit can actually translate his captaincy on the international stage. If this match is an indicator of the future, then the early signs are very promising.
He was in control from the very beginning, winning the toss and having no hesitation in bowling first. The field placements were spot-on, his bowling changes were attacking, and the captaincy only seemed to have a positive effect on his batting, with him notching up a pretty classy 50. Of course, these are still early days and he will definitely face much tougher tests ahead. But for now, he ticked all boxes on his ODI captaincy debut and that is what matters.

3. India’s landmark game triumph; Rohit Sharma leads with the bat

This was India’s 1000th One-day International match. The first-ever team to play these many ODI games. This is a staggering feat and definitely deserves credit. It has been a long journey from being one of the rank outsiders to becoming the giants of the modern game. India has had their share of ups and downs. But today was a day of joy and celebration. And what better way to celebrate match number 1000 than an all-around victory. India was dominant in every aspect and the victory was a result of that dominance. We all will be hoping for many more matches of overwhelming success and happy memories for cricket fans across the nation.
