India won the Champions trophy and Rohit Sharma has not looked back ever since. With every passing match he improved leaps and bounds and soon spectators thronged to the stadium to see the elegant Mumbaikar bat.
His lazy elegance was appreciated as a spectacle to the eye. He started scoring big hundreds. He scored 3 double centuries in ODI with 264 being the ultimate definition of spectacular batting. Teams around the world believed that once he got in, he would be difficult to dislodge. The 2019 World Cup witnessed the best of Rohit Sharma. He amassed 648 runs and smashed 5 centuries. Needless to say he won the Golden Bat
We can break Rohit Sharma’s career into two parts – before 2013 and after 2013. All his innings before 2013 were as pleasing to the eye as it is today. But the innings were shortlived. Just when he looked to be controlling the game, he would throw away his wicket. His shot selection was questioned on many occasions but never his talent. He was criticised for throwing his wicket away and his lazy elegance came under a lot of fire. Post 2013, he became a different player. He took his time before unleashing his wide range of strokes. A lot of credit should go to Shikhar Dhawan for supporting him by taking the pressure off Rohit Sharma. Normally Shikhar is the one who is aggressive from the word go and so the run rate pressure is not felt by Rohit. Some time ago the supporters of the Indian team believed that if Tendulkar batted for 40 overs then India would win. They say the same about Rohit Sharma these days!
His effortless hits into the stands is a testimony of his excellent timing. When on song, he makes the best bowlers in the business look ordinary. He has a good cricketing mind and that has been proven with the four IPL titles he won for MI as captain. Had his game been more consistent in the first half of his career, he would have been close to Virat or ahead of him in runs, centuries, average, etc.
After the lockdown is lifted, when cricket resumes, it would be interesting to see if the talent of Rohit Sharma or the intensity of Virat Kohli will be off the blocks first. The form of Rohit Sharma is as important as the form of Kohli. Let’s hope he is on a roll till 2023 and win the World Cup for India.
