Ranji Trophy 2019-20 concluded on March 13th with Saurashtra winning its maiden title. The tournament lived up to the expectation of displaying quality cricket and big performances from players who present themselves as candidates for Indian team.
The tournament was divided into 3 groups, the top teams grouped in the elite A and B category and then the teams were placed in the elite C category, followed by new entrants in the plate category. 5 teams from the elite A and B go through the quarters with 2 from elite C and the winners of plate.
The format is made in such a way that the tournament is competitive and performances are valued. As was expected, the top 4 semifinalists were from the elite A and B group. Gujarat, Bengal, Saurashtra and Karnataka made it into the semis and then Saurashtra played Bengal in an intriguing final which was decided by first innings lead and awarded to Saurashtra.
There were many impressive performances which came out from the tournament. 10 players had a batting average above 65 and 9 players scored more than 800 runs. The most improved player and a thorough entertainer was Sarfaraz Khan who scored 928 runs at an average of 154.67. Sarfaraz, who was earlier criticized for his fitness, proved a point with his skills. His most notable performance was scoring a 300 when Mumbai were in for a 600 runs chase against Uttar Pradesh. Rahul Dalal was the highest run scorer with 1340 runs in 17 innings. Lately, the Indian cricket team has struggled in the middle orders and players like Saurashtra’s Arpit Vasavada and Bengals Anustup Majumdar present a strong case with their match-winning and match-saving performances. Paras Dogra and Puneet Bisht, who are regular in the domestic circuits, continued to impress us. The overall batting display was as expected. Full of dominance and long innings from batsmen, showing little respite for the bowlers.
In tough Indian conditions, there were bowlers who displayed match-winning skills. Saurashtra skipper Jaydev Unadkat picked up the most wickets and showed his consistency with the ball. The record-holder of most wickets, Bihar’s Ashutosh Aman bagged 49 wickets this season. His consistency and control over spin bowling is something that needs to be considered. 13 bowlers bagged more than 40 wickets, and spinners had the best economy rate. Yet again, we couldn’t spot a genuine all-rounder who could bat and bowl equally well.
Like always, Ranji Trophy which is the backbone of Indian cricket, has produced talents, it has given us a pool of players and it is up to the management to effectively screen and select the most useful players. There are also ones, who despite all their talents and dedication, never got to wear the Indian jersey. Amol Majumdar, Rajinder Goel, Padmakar Shivalkar, Bundela,Sitansu Kotak, Yere Goud and Ashish Winston Zaidi are few legendary names who never made it in the Indian team. Now, with the Test Championships, each match is important and hence national team selection should be done on a more analytical and statistical reasoning. There is no room to prolong with underperforming players. Also with data available, the impact of influential players and team management must be minimized and focus should be on performance. Ranji Trophy will continue to give us rough diamonds but now it is the Management’s duty to polish them.
