When Mohammed Siraj was caught by Rachin Ravindra off Ajaz Patel, it was only for the third time in the history of the game that a bowler had claimed all 10 wickets in an innings.
Ajaz was a Mumbai resident till the age of 8 before migrating to New Zealand. He started off as a seam bowler and then became a left-arm orthodox bowler. It’s a commendable achievement and now he proudly sits along with 2 great spinners – Jim Laker and Anil Kumble to have achieved this phenomenal feat.
Take your thought back to the match against Pakistan at Kotla. Anil Kumble had picked up 9 wickets. Wasim Akram has gone on record to state that Waqar tried to get out to Srinath to deny Kumble the incredible landmark. He tried to hit Srinath in an attempt to get out but Srinath bowled wide. Thankfully Kumble dismissed Akram in the next over and entered the record books.
Fortunately, Siraj did not have the narrow mindedness of Waqar. He could have played out Ajaz and intentionally got out in the next over. That would have denied Ajaz of picking up 10 wickets but it would have been against the spirit of the game. India needed quick runs and so he attacked Ajaz Patel and lost his wicket. Well done Mohammed Siraj! Well done Team India! Every spectator in the ground and the entire Indian team applauded the Mumbai born New Zealander.
Congrats Ajaz Patel!
