When Dhoni decided to start preparation for the IPL it made every cricket fan inquisitive to know if the sabbatical had rusted the best finisher in white ball cricket. His brain works like a computer and that gives Virat Kohli the liberty to field in the outfield during the slog overs. Needless to say Virat has great respect and trust on Dhoni’s decisions.
For a while now, there are some ex-cricketers (and their fans) who believe that they were discarded from the team when they still had some cricket left in them. And that includes the current BCCI chairman Saurav Ganguly. Though Saurav has gone on record praising Dhoni’s immense contribution to Indian cricket, his statements on Dhoni’s retirement seem to be wrapped with caution. He says that he has spoken to Dhoni but does not want to reveal anything now. Honestly there are enough indications to suggest that Dhoni would need an outstanding IPL to stake claim as India’s wicketkeeper for the marquee event down under.
As we entered the month of March, the countdown began. Everybody was talking about the first match at the Wankhade stadium between MI and CSK. Dhoni would be on the line of fire straightaway. With Boult, Bumrah and Malinga, MI have a very envious bowling attack and with most players of CSK not playing active international cricket anymore looked no match for the Champions of 2019. But even the ardent MI fan was a touch concerned not with the CSK team but with Dhoni’s captaincy and finishing prowess.
Last week when the COVID19 spread its tentacles across a few more cities in India, the alarm bells rang. Soon it was declared that the IPL is postponed to April 15th. While the BCCI was keen to host the event, presently it’s only a dream wish. The entire country in on the edge. Restrictions are being imposed on travel, events, etc. It looks highly improbable that the event will take place this summer. With hardly any other window, the probability of the IPL taking place this year is very very low.
If the IPL is not played, can Dhoni be considered for the T20 world cup? Very difficult! Since he has not played a single match after the semis in July last year in England, his match-fitness and form is unknown. In such a situation, would the selectors pick him? Very unlikely. Nobody will criticise the selectors for not picking Dhoni because there is no evidence that he can still send the ball soaring out of the ground. Did his long break from cricket come back to hurt him? However for the selectors COVID 19 will make their job easy on Dhoni’s case.
