Delhi Capitals had destiny in their hands before playing the game against Mumbai Indians but it wasn’t their night. Rishabh Pant in particular had one of his worst nights as captain and DC fans will be very much disappointed and frustrated with their skipper’s contribution in such a crucial fixture for them. MI won the toss and elected to field first at the Wankhede. Delhi had Prithvi Shaw back but they had a poor start to their innings after Warner and Marsh departed early.
Pant and Powell recovered the innings and helped DC post 159. Coming on to chase MI suffered an early blow after Rohit Sharma’s departure. They cruised through their chase courtesy of Ishan Kishan and Dewald Brevis before Tim David finished it off. With this win, MI finished their campaign at the bottom of the pile but it was Royal Challengers Bangalore who qualified for the playoffs.
Let’s look at the talking points of the IPL 2022 match between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals –
Jasprit Bumrah shined again at Wankhede
It has been the worst season for MI and Bumrah’s off form has been a reason behind it. Bumrah though has shown some glimpses of returning to form against KKR earlier where he took a 5-fer but for a losing cause. Against Delhi, Bumrah produced his magic again to dismiss Prithwi Haw and inform Mitchell Marsh early in the game to push DC to backfoot. Later on, in the death overs, he cleaned up Rovman Powell with a yorker.
Rohit Sharma’s poor form continues
The hitman ends a disappointing season with the bat after he got out for just 2 in the last game of this season. It is now two seasons in a row that Rohit Sharma has failed to register a half-century. MI skipper scored a total of 268 in 14 games with an average of 20.62. The 35-year-old will be looking to get back to form before the ICC WT20 begins later this year.
Rishabh Pant’s decisions cost DC again
DC skipper had a good game with the bat as he scored an important 39 runs to build the innings which helped DC’s total to 159. But it was a below-par total at the Wankhede and DC bowlers had to be at their best to contain MI. DC had their chances in the game to restrict MI but some poor fielding and decision making particularly from Rishabh Pant cost them the game. Pant dropped a sitter of Dewald Brevis who went on to score 37. After that Pant caught behind Tim David but the Umpire gave not out. Pant had 2 reviews left in his locker and he decided not to take them even after a few players asked him to take them.
Replay showed that the ball indeed kissed David’s bat and he would have been out if Pant took the review. David then went on to score 34 from 11 to change the game in MI’s favour in a matter of moments. Pant said that his team was not good enough to win the game.
“For most of the game, we were on top. On occasions, we let the game slip away from our grasp when we were on top. That is what we were doing throughout the season. Not good enough to win this match I guess. It’s not about pressure. We could have done better execution and planning. Learn from mistakes and come back stronger next year,” Pant said.
Reacting to the entire episode, Pant said, “I thought there was something (about not reviewing the Tim David caught behind). Everyone standing in the circle wasn’t convinced and in the end, I didn’t go up.”
