If the world would not have been affected by the deadly COVID 19, today we would be analysing each of the 8 teams preparing for the IPL 2020. The BCCI under Saurav Ganguly has kept the hopes of cricket fans alive by not writing off the event but postponing the event to April 15th. In the recently concluded IPL Governing Council meeting, various options were discussed to get the tournament underway post April 15. One thing is for sure, the magnitude of IPL 13 will definitely not match the previous IPL seasons but given the present scenario it may still be accepted by the fans.
If the government gives the green signal on April 15 and issue visas for foreign players, it will give the authorities almost 3 weeks less to complete the IPL. Well they can extend the tournament till the end of May provided the monsoon stays away. Let’s see what were the options discussed in the meeting?
Option 1. Play the matches behind closed doors (no spectator in the ground). One question that everyone would ask is: Will the players be excited or comfortable to play in an empty stadium? For me as a fan, it’s a definite NO! Imagine a ball sails into the stands. And the batsman does not hear the buzz and the music or see the cheerleaders dancing. Undoubtedly it’s the atmosphere in the stadium that gets the adrenaline flowing.
Option 2. Have 2 groups and each team in the group plays with each other. The top 2 sides of each group enter the semis and subsequently the semis and final can be played. Here’s my view as a cricket fan – the beauty of the IPL is to have each team playing against each other in the ‘home & away’ concept. With the 2 group formula, the teams won’t be challenged by teams in the other group in the round robin stage. But if there is no way out and the BCCI is desperate to play then this is the best option.
Option 3. Might seem ridiculous but have 2-3 matches every day. Of course the broadcaster will rebel as there will be a huge financial loss for Star TV. Even the franchisees would not be interested considering the logistical nightmares the franchisees will have to bear.
Other options did not come out in the public so one is not aware of it.
To begin with, the tournament can get underway only if this deadly disease is controlled around the world. Secondly international players should be ready to fly down to India. Players from Australia and England could be reluctant to travel to India. It’s only natural for everybody to stay at home when there is a worldwide problem. Moreover as hosts,it’s our responsibility to ensure that the foreign players and support staff don’t turn patients during their visit to our country.
It would be interesting to see how many would board the flight to India, if the visas are issued by the government. The big names may skip the tournament and nobody can complain if they do so.
Conclusion: The IPL should not be conducted! Agreed, the IPL is the pride of India but is it more valuable than human health and life? No way! Yes the BCCI will lose money if it’s not conducted, franchisees and fans would be disheartened, sponsors would be disappointed but all this count for nothing when human life is at stake. We don’t know what will happen in the next few days. Will India be severely affected by COVID 19? If I were to decide the fate of IPL 13, it would not be played. Hope the government directs the board to call off the event this year!
