128 days of watching great matches of the past on YouTube finally ended on July 8 as the first test match between England and West Indies got underway at Southampton. For starters, Joe Root will be back as captain but will it be at the expense of Denly or Crawley? At 34, Joe Denly is neither a long term prospect nor did he have a great match at Southampton. On the other hand Zak Crawley looked impressive in the second innings. With age on his side, since he is 22, England in all probability will persist with him. However it will be interesting to see if the selectors go in with youth or experience. Another decision of the selectors that was overly debated was the exclusion of Stuart Broad. Mark Wood who replaced Broad picked up just 2 wickets in the match. Should the selectors get Broad back for the second test, be rest assured that he will bowl with a lot of purpose and that will benefit England tremendously. The famous Anderson-Broad pair will be back in action together and that will please many English fans. They have been the backbone of England’s success for a very long time and it would be foolhardy not to have them together going into a match to save the series.
In all likelihood, West Indies will go with an unchanged side. It’s not very often that the West Indies team find themselves 1-0 up in a 3 match series. Jason Holder has been the linchpin of this West Indies team. His calm demeanour coupled with all round performance is so pleasing to the eye. Just the other day Sachin Tendulkar went on record stating that Jason Holder is the most underrated all rounder. And Jason Holder acknowledged the master’s opinion by claiming 6 wickets in the first innings and staying calm to shepherd the team to victory.
The biggest challenge for the West Indies team in recent times have been performing consistently. One test match they will impress every single fan and in the very next match they will meekly capitulate. The young West Indian players who got an opportunity since the regular players like Hetmyer, Bravo and Paul opted out will do their career a world of good with some sterling consistent performances. Jason Holder will have to push them not to be complacent as the Englishmen will come out all guns blazing on July 16th.
West Indies had some standout batting performances in the first test match but none more than Blackwood’s fantastic innings. West Indies will be hoping that the 28 year old Jamaican does not fritter away a good start. Blackwood played well and almost got to the 3 figure mark but the bad habit of playing a loose shot came to haunt him. The pace attack looked nice and sharp with Gabriel picking up a bagful of wickets ably supported by Holder. If Roach and Joseph have a good day, then West Indies could possibly hand over England their first series defeat in 32 years but that’s not going to be easy.
Nevertheless a mouth-watering test match seems to be in prospect at the Emirates stadium. West Indies have been the second favourite team for many cricket fans in India and around the world.
