WI Vs IND: The Test Struggles Of Shubman Gill In The WTC Final And Against The Windies; What Went Wrong After Such A Successful IPL Season!?

WI Vs IND Updates: If anyone has been following Indian cricket for the past, they must have cast their eyes on Shubman Gill and the juggernaut that he is becoming in the world of cricket. It started off with a ton in Bangladesh, after which he just went on from strength to strength in all formats. His exploits included a double hundred in the ODI vs New Zealand, and then a T20i hundred against the same opponents in Ahmedabad. He then had a century against Australia in the BGT Test Series, which only went on to further cement the goodwill that he had built in the past few months.

If that was not enough, he went on to have an IPL for the ages, where he amassed a jaw-dropping 890 runs in Gujarat Titans’ run to their second consecutive finals appearance. That run had some mesmerizing hundreds, particularly against RCB and the Mumbai Indians. All the signs pointed out to 2023 becoming the year that signifies Gill’s breakout party. Except, that hasn’t yet materialized.

In the next 4 innings since the highs of the first half of the year, Gill has had a lean run with the bat, which coincidentally has aligned with India’s Test Calendar. While he was guilty of giving away his wicket in both the innings of the WTC Final after getting a considerable understanding of the conditions, his voluntary request to be coming to bat at number 3 in the ongoing tour vs the West Indies has not borne fruit as well. With scores of 6 and 12, it’s safe to say that his transition to the new position has been rocky to begin with.

WI Vs IND: What Has Gone Wrong With Shubman Gill In This Series!?

Now we all know that Gill is different gravy when it comes to the white ball formats, as seen with his sensational run in the first five months of the year in the ODIs and t20s that he played in. However, the fact that he is not able to translate that same qualities in the longest format of the game makes you wonder whether he is actually cut-out for the red-ball format.

He has played 33 innings in Test cricket so far, and has an average of just 31, which is something that you would not expect from someone who is touted to be the next big thing in Indian cricket. So it could be better if the Indian think tank take the required steps to harness the qualities that he has into the white ball leg, with two major World Cups coming in the space of 7 months of each other.

As far as the Test side of things are concerned, it is still early days in his career, and we could yet see a tremendous upturn in his form as well as fortune in the upcoming years in red-ball cricket, but for now it is better to plan with the immediate future in mind, and that is the focus on the ODI and T20 side of things.
