The West Indies batsmen in the late 1960s and early 1970s were becoming a force to reckon with. They batted with flair and introduced aggressive stroke-play with immaculate technique which became the new standard of world cricket. The entire batting line-up was a pain for the opposition as the batsmen took turns to display their batsmanship. In those days, West Indies were focused on gaining pride in the cricket world, and not only entertain cricket fans but also win matches. India, at that time lagged behind in terms of sports training and match preparedness. There were no express bowlers which was a necessity in a world full of bouncy wickets. There was an over-reliance on spinners, who would naturally feel out of place in overseas conditions. In the early 60s, Rohan Kanhai and Sir Gary Sobbers were two names who had monumental performances versus India. Rohan Kanhai’s overall average was 47.5, but against India he averaged 62.7. Sir Gary Sobers on the other hand averaged 83.4 against India versus his career average of 57.8. As we come to the 1970s, Sir Viv Richards, Sir Clive Lloyd, Gordon Greenidge, Alvin Kallicharan, Larry Gomes and Desmond Haynes were some names that dominated West Indies batting. Each of them had their own idiosyncrasies, yet their intent to dominate over the bowlers in their own way was a commonality.
In those days, these batsmen dominated over England and Australian bowlers, and so Indian bowling attack posed no danger to them and was an opportunity to express themselves and play fearless cricket. Indian team relied heavily on spinners. The spinners had great records against England and Australia but West indies batsmen of those days played spinners well. They would tactfully rotate strike and also swept the ball better than others. Erapally Prasanna, India’s ace spinner bowled 519 overs against West Indies and picked only 34 wickets with a strike rate of 91.62. Bishen Singh Bedi bowled 908 overs against West Indies and picked 62 wickets at a strike rate of 82.75. Venkatraghavan bowled 1090 overs, and took 68 wickets at a strike rate of 96.18. This goes on to explain the extent to which Indian plans failed against West Indies. Eventually, their batsmen would get comfortable playing spin. In the 70s West Indies also had the strongest ODI team winning both the World Cups. In the late 70s, India’s greatest fast bowler Kapil Dev made his entry in the Indian team. He achieved significant success against West Indies with his uncanny ability to swing the ball both ways. Sir Viv Richards also commented that Kapil Dev created the avenue for Indian cricket. India achieved the impossible in the 1983 World Cup as Kapil Dev’s men turned the world upside down by defeating the mighty West Indies in the finals. Yet, India struggled in test matches against West Indies. It seemed as if Kapil Dev had no support. In the 1980s India lost 9 test matches against West Indies.
The baton was further passed onto upcoming talents like Richardson, Carl Hooper, Brian Lara and Shivnaraine Chanderpaul. West Indies continued to dominate test cricket till 1995. There was a paradigm shift in 2000s; India started winning against West Indies. As the pitches started deteriorating in the West Indies, their cricket board faced a crisis in terms of lack of leadership and ability to produce cricketers who could get the crowds going. Indian cricket, on the other hand were adamant for a change in the right direction as the country faced a setback by the match-fixing events of 1999 .Brain Lara, one of the greatest test batsmen, averaged a mere 35 against India versus his career average of 52. In 17 test matches, Lara managed to get only 2 centuries. Anil Kumble had significant success against him. Kumble also picked 74 wickets against West Indies with a strike rate of 63.42. After Lara’s retirement there was a dearth of batsmen in West Indies. Many came and went but to no avail.
Shivnaraine Chanderpaul led the way, averaging 64 against India but couldn’t get support from the other end and hence they didn’t win test matches, as India continued to dominate. In the 2010s; India became one of the major forces of world cricket in terms of power of finance and quality of the game. West Indies test cricket was hit hard by T20. Most the players preferred lucrative T20 contracts of foreign leagues over confusing board contracts. Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels averaged 31 against India. They too didn’t play many matches because of internal conflicts with the board. From 2002 to 2020, West Indies didn’t win a single test series against India. In modern times their batting cannot boast of a single name that will bring them success.
The graph steadily declined. Once a batting force that inspired batsmen all round the world, the West Indies batting today faces a crisis within. It was aggression that started it all and can that aggression be rekindled? Can West Indies test team ever be like that of india, Australia and England?
