Rohit Sharma is now officially the captain of the Indian cricket team in the T20 internationals after Virat Kohli decided to step down after the disappointing end of his team at ICC World T20 last week. Even though Kohli’s captaincy record was overall good in international cricket but a major trophy was always missing in the cabinet. In the IPL as well, Kohli failed to deliver a trophy at Royal Challengers Bangalore as captain even after having one of the strongest teams on paper in the competition.
On the other side, there is no question about how successful captain Rohit Sharma has been in the IPL, where he has guided Mumbai Indians to win five trophies. Hitman started his journey as an official captain of the Indian cricket team with a win against New Zealand in Jaipur last night.
Rohit’s close friend and Mumbai Ranji Trophy team-mate, Abhishek Nayar, said that consistency was the newest India T20 captain’s mantra, Nayar told news18.com.
Let’s look at three reasons which made Rohit Sharma a different captain from Virat Kohli-
Tactically brilliant and wins tosses
One of the biggest reasons behind Rohit Sharma’s IPL success has been his tactical approach to every game. His game reading capability really sets his standards very high and against an in-form New Zealand side, he started with a win under his belt. The bowling changes were very good even not having the strongest bowling attack, India managed to contain the Kiwis at a par score in Jaipur.
Another additional point was that in his first two games as skipper, the newly named skipper won both his tosses. This was something that Kohli had failed to do in the World Cup and it might have cost India their initial games.
Knows opponent’s strengths and weakness
After playing so many years in International cricket, Rohit Sharma has got a ton of experience. He knows exactly what the opponent is capable of and makes his team play accordingly. The Hitman also don’t like to make too many changes in his team while it is going well, and that is really positive.
Rohit Sharma showcases less aggression on the field, more with the bat
There is a big difference in aggression when it comes to the comparison between Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Not much aggressive on the field, the Hitman likes to be more aggressive with the bat. He made a brilliant 48 while chasing and gave India a flying start. He was a bit unlucky not to reach the half-century mark.
