It was a wobble, but not enough to make this Indian team stumble and lose their way. They took care of business in a professional manner, sealing the match as well as the series with a thorough pasting of a full strength South Africa side, beating them by 7 wickets and sealing the series 2-1. The bowling was on fire as they dismantled the Proteas for their lowest score against India in ODIs, before getting to the target with minimal fuss.
There were a lot of positives to take from this series and a host of contributions from almost everyone be it with bat or ball. This was good to see from the home side, as the team gelled really well, giving the perfect performance.
Here are the talking points from the IND Vs SA ODI series-
The batting picks up pace
All three venues were different from each other and had its own set of challenges when it came to batting. Yet the Indian batsmen put in statement performances in each venue to send a strong message to the rest that even a second string Indian batting is up to the mark.
The likes of Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, and Shubman Gill all got amongst the runs and did their 50 over World Cup chances absolutely no harm in this series. The fact that these batsmen are in form and firing on all cylinders only bodes well for the Indian side in the future.
Bowlers show their mettle in the IND Vs SA ODI series
In the past few series, and since last year, the bowling attack in the powerplay has been among the poorest, with an economy of close to 6 an over as well as the worst average in terms of wickets taken. However, the bowling in this series has been absolutely fantastic. Siraj, Kuldeep, Bishnoi, Avesh and Washington Sundar have been brilliant, managing to take quick wickets as well as stifle the batsmen, not allowing them the runs without a mighty struggle. Siraj in particular has been in fine nick, using all the tricks in his bag to get wickets in the powerplay, thus breaking the back of the South African batting.
South Africa in trouble
The series loss puts a lot of trouble on the Proteas as far as qualifying for the 2023 World Cup. With hosts India and 7 other teams gaining direct qualification, South Africa are currently outside the safe zone, and with them already forfeiting the ODI series against Australia, their path has now become much more tougher after this series loss. The South African side finds itself in real danger of playing the qualifier tournament for the World Cup, and that is not a good sign for a team that is so well balanced and among the best in the world.
