Day 5 Analysis
England had gone in to the day 5 at 37-2 with a lead of 219 runs. They had to ensure that they get plenty of runs and also give their bowlers plenty of time in order to take 10 wickets.
First session saw Ben Stokes carrying his good form and was really unbelievable with some of the shots he hit; he got a 50 of 36 balls, remember he was batting on 16 of 18 balls at stumps on day 4. Joe Root was the only batsmen out for 22 as he sacrificed his wicket in the form of run out. Ollie Pope came in at 5 and got 12 of 7 balls as he and Ben Stokes were the not out batsmen before England declared at 129-3 with Stokes breath-taking innings of 78 of 57 balls with 4 fours and 3 massive sixes. West Indies had a chance to get the wicket of Ben Stokes as John Campbell dropped an easy catch of a Shannon Gabriel delivery when he was batting on 29. England made 92 runs in 11 overs and lost only 1 wicket and gave West Indies a target of 312 runs in 85 overs. The chase from West Indies started on a disastrous note as the Windies lost 3 wickets in the session as they lost John Campbell for 4 of Stuart Broad delivery as he was caught behind, they also lost their in form opener Kraigg Brathwaite for 12 as Chris Woakes got the ball to nip back sharply and was lbw, Shai Hope would consider himself unlucky as he got a terrific delivery from Stuart Broad that not only nipped back sharply but bounced a little low making it unplayable and his off stump got uprooted. Hope made 7 runs. West Indies had gone into lunch at 25-3 with Shamarh Brooks and Roston Chase the twonot out batsmen batting together. This session belonged to England, no doubt about that.
The second session post lunch started on a bad note for Windies as they lost their in form middle order batsmen Roston Chase for 6 runs as Stuart Broad made him lbw and Chase not offering any shot made the umpire’s job easy to raise his finger. Jermaine Blackwood and Shamarh Brooks counterattacked and got the bowlers on a backfoot straightaway and both the batsmen reached their half centuries. Can you keep Ben Stokes out of the game? With just one over left for tea Stokes got the wicket of Blackwood as he bowled a quick short ball before giving Jos Butler a fine diving catch. Blackwood got 55 runs and together they stitched a partnership of exactly 100 runs and Windies had gone to tea at 137-5 as the session did belong slightly to Windies but England wouldn’t mind that as they still had 40 odd overs to bowl which is plenty.
The third session post tea saw West Indies losing a wicket of Shane Dowrich immediately as Chris Woakes bowled a middle-leg line and Dowrich wanted to play on the leg side and he wasn’t on the line of the ball and was lbw for a duck. The thing we discussed on our expectations of day 5 was West Indies going into the shell of defending everything that came their way and this is what Brooks tried to do in this session and was not batting the way which is expected from him. To me this was probably the final nail in the coffin for the Windies as far as this test is considered. Shamarh Brooks got out for 62 runs. Sam Curran took his wicket and was plumb in front. Jason Holder tried hard and played in a positive manner and was not afraid to play some shots he made 35 runs before Dominic Bess got the ball to turn sharply and Holder was in no position to drive the ball as there was big gap between bat and pad before the ball hitting the stumps. Ben Stokes picked the wicket of Alzarri Joseph for 9 runs as Joseph tried to drive the ball before edging it to Dominic Bess at gully. Kemar Roach got out to Dominic Bess for 5 before Ollie Pope took a brilliant sharp catch at short leg. West Indies got all out for 198 runs and England won the match by 113 runs making this series alive and we are set for an epic decider at Old Trafford.
Ben Stokes was adjudged the man of the match after scoring 176 runs and 78 not out in both the innings and with the ball picking 3 wickets in the test match and out of these 2 were very important wickets of Kraigg Braithwaite for 75 in the first innings and Jermaine Blackwood for 55 in the second innings. Harsha Bhogle commented “I think Stokes is being wasted on a cricket ground. In this form, he will probably find a vaccine for Covid”. Such is the impact of Ben Stokes whether it’s the World Cup final or the Ashes, pressure gets the best out of him. Let us salute his heroics.
