CWC 2023: 5 Major Flaws In The Indian Squad That Wasim Jaffer Picked For The Tournament

CWC 2023 Latest!! The ICC World Cup is just about two months away from beginning and each team has begun their preparations in right earnest. As host nation, India will be looking to win the trophy on home soil and end their decade long trophy drought at the same time. To add to the positives of the side currently, the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, and Prasidh Krishna have been making great strides in their recovery from the injuries that they sustained.

While everyone will be wondering what would be the side that will be selected for the World Cup, former India opener Wasim Jaffer has gone ahead and picked his squad of 15 for the marquee tournament. While it does look good, there are quite a few problems that arise in the dynamic of the selection too.

Below is the team he picked!!

We take a look at the flaws of this Wasim Jaffer side for CWC 2023-

1. No Ashwin in the CWC 2023 squad!?

Jaffer has gone with Axar, Jadeja, and Kuldeep Yadav as the frontline spinners in the side. While all three are pretty good in their own right, Jaffer has overlooked arguably the best spinner for the Indian conditions, and that is R Ashwin. The veteran is a wicket-taking machine in Indian pitches and is an asset in the longer version of the white ball game. Add to the fact that he is a more than useful contributor with the bat, Jaffer surely has missed a trick by excluding the veteran office.

2. Shikhar Dhawan over Suryakumar Yadav for the CWC 2023 squad

Jaffer has gone with three openers, which sees Shikhar Dhawan take the spot for the third opener. While ODIs has long been the left-hander’s preferred format, he is not the same player he once was. His strike rate has gone down considerably, and his percentage of dot-balls has increased at the same time. With India going for a new aggressive approach in the first ten overs of the game, Dhawan is clearly not the right choice, which warrants a selection for Suryakumar Yadav. He’s not had the best of introductions to the format, but has enough quality to make a turnaround.

3. Lack of a left-arm seamer; namely Arshdeep Singh

Jaffer in his squad has decided to go with an all right arm pace unit of Bumrah, Shami and Siraj. However, he has left out Arshdeep who has been one of India’s premier pacers, and what separates him from the rest is that he is a left-armer. With Bumrah still unreliable with regards to his health and fitness, it could have been a wise move to draft in Arshdeep.

However, it seems like Jaffer and BCCI both feel like he is a T20 bowler and the fact that he has been named in the side for the upcoming Asian games, which overlap with the World Cup, it seems like he is not in the plans for 50 over cricket just yet. But on the off chance that Bumrah is still not healthy in time for the WC, Arshdeep should be drafted immediately.

4. No place for Yuzi Chahal??

Jaffer has gone with a spin line-up that entirely consists of left-arm spinners. Two left arm spinners should be more than enough in these conditions, which paves the way for Chahal in the side. Chahal has time and again proved that he is a very effective spinner in the 50-over format, and after not playing a single game in the T20 World Cup, he should be given an opportunity in this World Cup to not only make the numbers, but also play in key fixtures.

5. Picking Shardul Thakur over Deepak Chahar

With a fast-bowling all-rounder needed to support Hardik Pandya’s workload, Jaffer picked Shardul Thakur. Now no one is doubting the skills and quality of Thakur, but he is just too inconsistent at the top level, which is something that India cannot afford in crucial World Cup games. Deepak Chahar is a much better option and can provide much more incisive bowling if used correctly.
