CSK v MI: Disaster And Drama; As Two Teams Out Of IPL 2022 Face Each Other

Review of the CSK vs MI game- Mumbai Indians got their first win in three years at the Wankhede stadium after they beat defending champions Chennai Super Kings by 5 wickets. This win did not help MI to improve their position in the IPL standings but after this defeat, CSK is now out of the playoff race. The two most successful teams in the tournament are sitting at the bottom of the pile. This is the first time in the tournament’s history that both MI and CSK are not in the IPL playoffs.

We are going to see a new champion this year after 2016. Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to field first. Daniel Sams and Riley Meredith’s incredible fast bowling spell bundled out CSK for their second-lowest total in history i.e. 97. It looked like an easy chase but CSK did put some early pressure sending 4 MI batters back to the pavilion within the powerplay. Tilak Varma’s calm and composed innings helped MI chase down the total comfortably in the end. MS Dhoni claimed that their batters did not apply their full potential in this game.

“The opposition bowled really well and a bit of application was needed from our side. A few of our batters got out on good deliveries. We can not really help that but other than that these are the kind of games where you learn a lot so hopefully they are learning from each and every game,” Dhoni said during the post-game presentation.

Let’s look at the talking points of the CSK v MI game –

MI pacers had a great night

It was one of the best performances from the Australian quickie Daniel Sams in the IPL. The 29-year-old was all over CSK batters in his first spell and picked up in form Devon Conway for a duck. Moeen Ali and Ruturaj Gaikwad also were his victims. Sams finished his spell with 3/16 from his four overs. On the other hand, Riley Meredith also got some big help from the Wankhede surface as he got two sculps to his name as well. Jasprit Bumrah was economical again and gave away only 12 from his three overs picking up the wicket of Robin Uthappa.

MS Dhoni the lone-warrior with the bat in CSK vs MI

CSK skipper was the lone battler with the bat as he remained unbeaten on 36 off 33 balls. The 40-year-old icon is in good touch this season with the bat. However he needed someone to be there with him till the end to have a chance to get to the competitive score, but it did not happen.

A sensible knock from Tilak Varma

The 19-year-old is proving to be a hell of a talent. Tilak Varma started his innings when MI were 33/4 and the chase was looking tougher than it was. The teenager played a sensible knock of 34 runs off 32 balls and built a partnership with Hrithik Shokeen to help MI get over the line. Tilak has now over 300 runs to his name which makes him the first teenager with the highest total runs in one season.
