The IPL announces an award for the ‘Emerging Player Of The Season’.
Not all of them have enjoyed the same level of success later on in their careers. Three of them have never made it to their national team.
Shreevats Goswami (2008): A key contributor in the top order during India’s successful campaign at the 2008 U19 World Cup in Malaysia, Goswami was roped in by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for the inaugural editon of IPL where he played under then Captain Rahul Dravid. He was an aggressive batsmen and played some good knocks for his side which led to him becoming the first ever winner of the IPL Emerging Player Of The Year Award. He didn’t get many opportunities to play in the next 2 seasons and in 2011 he joined KKR (Kolkata Knight Riders), where he had a forgettable season as he could only manage 29 runs in 5 games.
In 2012 he joined RR (Rajasthan Royals), but there also he couldn’t make a big impact and after that he was released the very next year.
In 2018 Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) bought him in the auction and he played 6 games that year; he was giving the side a good start but he failed to convert his starts into big scores; thus later he was dropped from the playing XI.
Iqbal Abdulla (2011): In 2011, the Kolkata Knight Riders had a secret weapon that surprised the fans and most importantly, the opponents; his name was Iqbal Abdulla. The young left-arm spinner bowled some brilliant spells throughout the season, his ability to turn the ball and make the batsmen uncomfortable made him a player to watch out for.
In 15 matches he picked up 16 wickets and was the Emerging Player of the season. The very next year with the arrival of Sunil Narine, Iqbal didn’t get as many chances but still continued to maintain his consistency in the chances he got with an economy rate of 6.54.
He then went on to play for Rajasthan Royals where he could only manage to play a single game throughout the whole season. He continued to perform well in domestic cricket for the Mumbai Ranji Team with his all-round performances and he was signed by the Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2015. But again, he could only manage to play 5 games the whole season; in 2016 he bowled some economical spells for his side especially in the Qualifier 1 against Gujarat Lions and his all-round performance was a main reason in RCB winning that game and making it to the finals that season. He was retained by RCB in 2017 but he could only manage to play 2 games where he gave away quite a few runs and was dropped from the team and later was released from the team. He was unsold in IPL auction 2018.
Basil Thampi (2017): Kerala pacer Basil Thampi’s ability to hit the deck hard and extract credible pace was the talking point in his inaugural season for Gujarat Lions in 2017. He claimed a decent haul of 11 wickets which included the wickets of some star hitters like Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli, Kieron Pollard, MS Dhoni and Hashim Amla, which led to him winning the Emerging Player Of The Season award in 2017.
The very next year he was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2018 auction for 95 lakhs. He could only manage to play 4 games the whole season. And he also got an embarrassing record in his name, which is the most expensive spell by a bowler in IPL history as he gave away 70 runs in his 4 overs against RCB, after which he was mostly warming the bench as many experienced and senior pacers were already a part of the team. In 2019 he was retained by Sunrisers Hyderabad but he got to play only 3 matches where he failed to picked up any wicket and thus was dropped from the playing XI.
It is one thing to get a start, but building on it is something different.
